Garde Manger

Our delicious dinner at Garde Manger was the highlight of my weekend trip to Montreal. Garde Manger is owned by Chuck Huges, of Chuck’s Day Off - one of my Food Network faves! I made our reservation a month in advance, and still only managed to get seats at the bar. This actually turned out to be one of the most lovely dining experiences, and I’d do it again if we ever go back.

The bar is at the back of the restaurant with only a few other tables, and lots of dim, flattering lighting. There were two handsome and charming bartenders who were knowledgeable about the menu, and made unobtrusive, delightful conversation. The menu was written on a chalkboard on the wall opposite us, so my photographer had to read it out loud for me since I forgot my glasses (small purse problems).

We had artisanal cocktails and butternut squash to start, and while I enjoyed an earthy mushroom risotto, he had a classic steak frites. The wine was good, and the dessert even better: homemade ice-cream bars! Nostalgia always wins.

Our hotel was just around the corner, so I was able to teeter back along the cobblestoned streets in my stilettos, a little tipsy and content. Sometimes all you need in life is an evening of good food, wine, and conversation.
